Welcome to The SEN Department

At Eden Park Academy, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to flourish in a supportive, understanding and inclusive environment.
Our dedicated Special Educational Needs (SEN) Department caters for students from Nursery through to Sixth Form, providing tailored support for learners with a wide range of mild to moderate additional needs. Our school is much more than a place of learning. It is a warm, welcoming and nurturing community where students are known, valued and supported to become confident, successful young people.

Who We Support

We recognise that every child is unique, and our personalised approach ensures that support is tailored to individual strengths, challenges and aspirations.
We welcome students with a variety of special educational needs, including:

A Trauma-Informed Approach

At Eden Park Academy, we understand that learning and emotional wellbeing go hand in hand. Our staff are trained in trauma-informed practices, enabling us to create safe, predictable and nurturing learning environments where students feel secure and understood. Our approach focuses on:

Building trusting relationships
Developing emotional resilience
Promoting self-regulation
Encouraging confidence and independence
Supporting positive behaviour through understanding rather than punishment

We seek to understand the reasons behind behaviours and work collaboratively with students and families to achieve positive outcomes.

Small Classes, Big Opportunities

Students benefit from our small class sizes of just 5 to 12 pupils, allowing teachers to provide personalised attention and targeted support.

Many of our students learn alongside mainstream peers in mixed-ability settings, encouraging inclusion, friendship and a sense of belonging within the wider school community.
Every class benefits from:

A dedicated Class Teacher
A Teaching Assistant (TA)
Support Teachers where required
Mentors who provide guidance and encouragement

This collaborative approach ensures that students receive support academically, socially and emotionally throughout the school day.

Expert SEN Leadership

Our SEN Department is led by an experienced and highly skilled SENCO, who works closely with students, parents and staff to ensure every learner receives the support they need. The SENCO is responsible for:

Identifying and assessing additional needs
Developing and reviewing Individual Education Plans (IEPs)
Monitoring progress and interventions
Supporting teachers with effective classroom strategies
Coordinating external professional involvement where necessary
Advocating for students and families

Through expert guidance and continuous collaboration, we ensure that every student's learning experience is both accessible and enriching.

Working in Partnership with Families, Professionals and Local Authorities

At Eden Park Academy, we believe that the best outcomes for students are achieved through strong collaboration between school, families and external professionals.
Our SEN Department works closely with Local Authorities, parents, carers and specialist agencies to ensure that every student receives the support they need to reach their full potential.
We regularly coordinate and contribute to:

Annual Reviews for students with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs)
Interim review meetings where appropriate
Multi-agency planning meetings
Early identification and intervention programmes
Transition planning between key stages and post-16 destinations

Where required, we ensure that students have access to specialist support from external professionals, including:

Our SENCO liaises regularly with these professionals to ensure recommendations are implemented effectively within school and reflected in students' Individual Education Plans (IEPs), classroom strategies and intervention programmes.
Through this collaborative approach, we ensure that students receive the right support at the right time, enabling them to thrive academically, socially and emotionally.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Set within 3.5 acres of beautiful green grounds, Eden Park Academy offers a unique environment where wellbeing and education work together.
We understand that some students learn best when movement and sensory regulation are incorporated into their day. Students who find sustained concentration difficult may be supported to:

Take supervised movement breaks
Walk in the fresh air with a Teaching Assistant
Engage in mindfulness and calming activities outdoors
Utilise sensory regulation strategies

Regular hydration is encouraged throughout the day, helping students remain focused, calm and ready to learn.

The Power of Music

We encourage all students to learn a musical instrument, not only as a valuable skill but also as a means of self-expression and emotional wellbeing.
Research consistently shows that music can:

Improve concentration
Reduce anxiety
Support emotional regulation
Build confidence and self-esteem
Provide a positive outlet for stress and tension

Music forms an important part of our holistic approach to education.

Our Sensory Room

Our dedicated sensory room provides a peaceful retreat for students who need support with regulation and emotional wellbeing.
Features include:

Soft lighting
Soft toys and comforting resources
Fidget and sensory equipment
Sensory tent
Bean bags and cushions
Calming music
Relaxing sensory experiences

The room offers a safe space where students can recharge, regulate and refocus before returning confidently to their learning.

Inclusion at the Heart of Everything

At Eden Park Academy, we do not separate or label our SEN students. Instead, we foster a culture where every child feels accepted and valued.
Our students are fully immersed in:

School life
Assemblies
Educational visits
